Gearing up for battle

I wrote this the other day and forgot to post it…guess that says everything about my state of mind these days…

Ivrea has been steadily gearing up for lo Storico Carnevale di Ivrea (as it’s known in these parts) over the past couple of weeks. There aren’t many signs of the festival over on this side of town, but over by the bridges and old town there are flags and banners and nets all over the place. The flags and banners denote the different team territories throughout town, which the teams defend by throwing oranges, and the nets are hung in front of buildings near the piazzas where the orange battles are held to protect the buildings from wayward oranges. I’m told the smell of oranges and horse manure is a memorable one. I can’t wait!
