Snow in Ivrea
It’s snowing in Ivrea at 1 AM. Here’s the view from my window:
Today was a strange day. I woke up around noon and joined a bunch of people at MoveTime, which is the only place in Ivrea that’s open to eat on a Sunday. It’s near the train station, and only about a ten minute walk away from Talponia. Once we were in the sun it was warm enough to wear a light jacket, but of course I was wearing a heavy coat - Talponia is underground, so the parking garage is always freezing and I tend to overestimate my insulation needs.
This was my first experience eating out for breakfast in Italy, and MovieTime made it even more memorable. On the walls were glamour shots of movie stars, movie posters in a variety of languages, and several TVs playing The Mummy. Entrees were named after movies, some of which I’d heard of, including such classics as Cocoon, Willow, Chinatown, and The Matrix. That one of the vegetarian plates was called Scarface made me scratch my head, but I was more impressed that they were actually serving vegetarian food. Of course this necessitated a lengthy description in the menu of what Soy is, but at least they’re trying. And it’s always nice to see beer and wine listed in the breakfast menu under beverages.
And now it’s snowing.
In other news:
I finished reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Ishmael, and even Distress.
Of no particular consequence: Halfway through writing this entry, I had to go outside for a snowball fight.

I’ll have to pick up a copy of some of those books David. Your reflection on the cyclical nature of things reminds me of my forestry days. One of the hardest concepts we (people) have is that our lifetime is short, and the environment is forever. I was often frustrated by the fact that government policy for forests would often change everytime a new government was elected, and forest plans needed to run for about 100 years. Touch to get into a cyclical pattern when these kinds of things are happening.
I think the idea is to keep trying though…
On another note, you might enjoy the fact that I will have my first Mac as of this weekend. Who knew… perhaps that’s the first sign of a cycle.
Cheers,
Terry
P.S. Checked out the ski area… looked very interesting. Reminded me of the days when we lived in Germany. Makes me want to ski in europe again.
Alison, Helen and I are headed out to Banff tomorrow to join here other cousins from Florida on the slopes.

Hi Terry:
So you’re taking the plunge and getting a mac, eh? I think my dad mentioned you were talking about the new G5…are you getting a G5 tower or the new mini?
We use iBooks at school, and it’s been interesting seeing the PC people tackle the transition. The biggest complaint I’ve heard so far is the one-button mouse…but you can solve this by getting a USB two-button mouse. =)
How was the move? I heard you sold your house practically immediately…that must have been nice!
Have fun skiing!

PS: I was going to email you, but I don’t seem to have your current email address.
